Before Session One · Eldenhold

Tales of Eldenhold

The city had schemes, grudges, prophets, thieves, and several ongoing disasters long before the party arrived.

Pre-campaign canon

These are not session recaps.

These fourteen stories happened before the Sunspire campaign began. They introduce Eldenhold through the people who already lived, lied, drank, stole, predicted doom, and occasionally tried to kill one another there.

They are part of the world’s background canon, but the player characters were not present for these events. The archive has also kept unrevealed faction identities behind the curtain. The curtain objects to being perceived.

Contains strong language and fantasy violence.
01Before the campaign · EldenholdA Night Gone to ShitA routine evening at the Broken Dagger becomes a bar-wide catastrophe—until Selene Varro walks through the door.

(The Broken Dagger – When Everything Goes to Hell at Once)

[Scene opens inside The Broken Dagger, the kind of tavern where you come in with a knife and leave with a scar. The air is thick with sweat, ale, and bad decisions. The dim candlelight barely cuts through the haze of smoke hanging over the room, and every table is occupied by people who probably shouldn’t be drinking together.

At the bar, Durnik "The Scar" Vale, the owner, wipes out a mug with a rag that ain’t been clean in years. He ain’t paid much mind to the group near the center of the room—he’s used to raised voices. It’s The Dagger. People yell. People drink. People get over it.

Except this time, they don’t.]

DURNIK "THE SCAR" VALE (gruff, unimpressed, deep dwarven accent): "Aye, I don’t give a shite what yer arguin’ about, so long as it don’t get in the way of me pourin’ drinks."

LAZARI "RAT" FENWICK (goblin, fast-talking, paranoid, already halfway standing on his chair): "Oi, oi, oi—ye don’t understand, Durnik! That fucker sold me bad powder! Nearly blew me fuckin’ hand off!"

UNKNOWN THUG #1 (grinning, leaning back in his chair, smug as hell): "Maybe that’s ‘cause ye ain’t got the brains to use it proper, eh?"

LAZARI (fur bristling, slamming his hands on the table): "Ohhh, ye wanna fuckin’ go, mate? Sniv’s died six times an’ he’s still got more luck than you do!"

UNKNOWN THUG #2 (leaning in, low and threatening): "Only one way t’ settle that, ain’t there?"

[A chair scrapes against the floor. Somewhere in the room, someone pulls a knife.]

DURNIK (not looking up, sighing, rubbing his temple): "I swear t’ fuckin’ Moradin, if one o’ ye starts shite in me bar tonight, ye best be prepared t’ be drinkin’ through a fuckin’ straw fer the rest o’ yer life."

*[And for a second, it seems like things might calm down—until a tankard flies across the room and smashes into the back of someone's head.]

UNKNOWN THUG #1 (grunting, standing up, furious): "OI! WHO THE FUCK THREW THAT?!"

SNIV THE UNLUCKY (somewhere in the back, whispering to himself): "Ohhh, dis ‘bout t’ be real bad."

UNKNOWN THUG #2 (grabbing a bottle and smashing it on the table): "You fucked up, mate."

*[Chaos erupts. Someone flips a table. A dagger embeds itself in the wooden post by the bar. A poor bastard gets shoved face-first into someone else's plate of stew. Chairs clatter, bodies collide, and just as things go to hell—the fucking door swings open.]

[A figure steps inside, calm as a storm just before it breaks. Selene Varro—the Queen’s Master of Whispers. Hood drawn, gloved fingers resting lazily on the hilt of a dagger at her hip. She surveys the scene with a slow, deliberate glance. No expression. No amusement. Just observation.]

SELENE VARRO (cold, detached, unbothered): "Mm. Looks like I came at a bad time."

[Everything stops. A man mid-punch pauses, fist still raised. Someone holding a broken bottle lowers it slightly, eyes darting toward the door. The tension shifts, hard, as people suddenly remember that some fights aren’t worth having when Selene’s watching.]

DURNIK (grumbling, shaking his head, tossing his rag on the bar): "Aye. That’s fuckin’ enough."

UNKNOWN THUG #1 (grumbling, straightening his coat, pretending nothing happened): "Ain’t no need fer no trouble, yeah? Just a, uh… friendly disagreement."

LAZARI (brushing himself off, muttering): "Pfft. Yeah. Real friendly."

SELENE (watching, unimpressed, voice quiet but cutting through the air like a blade): "I’ll assume no one’s been stupid enough to discuss business in front of me tonight, then."

SNIV (hiding under a table, whispering): "Ohhh, gods, Sniv hates when she does that voice."

[The energy in the room shifts hard. Selene doesn’t raise her voice. Doesn’t threaten. Doesn’t need to. Just being here is enough to make half the room start remembering that they have somewhere else to be. The fight fizzles out almost immediately, men muttering curses as they back off, shoulders still tense.]

DURNIK (gruff, sighing, shaking his head): "Fuckin’ piss-poor excuse fer a bar fight, if ye ask me."

SELENE (tilting her head slightly, dryly amused): "Somehow, Durnik, I doubt your standards for bar fights are particularly high."

DURNIK (snorting, pouring himself a drink): "Ye’d be feckin’ right about that."

SELENE (glancing over at the goblin under the table): "Sniv. You can come out now."

SNIV (peeking out, blinking): "Is… is da stabbin’ part over?"

SELENE (arching a brow, dry): "Depends. Are you going to make it worse?"

SNIV (grinning nervously): "Nnnnnnope! Noooope, Sniv knows when t’ fold. Ain’t suicidal."

DURNIK (grumbling, downing his drink): "Coulda feckin’ fooled me."

[Selene exhales through her nose, shakes her head slightly, and heads toward a back room, ignoring the lingering tension in the air. The fight’s done, the energy broken. One by one, people return to their drinks, muttering, licking their wounds. The only sound that lingers is the occasional groan from some poor bastard still on the floor.]

[And at the bar, Durnik pours himself another drink and doesn’t offer anyone else one. Because, frankly, they don’t fucking deserve it.]

02Before the campaign · EldenholdThe Many Deaths of Sniv the UnluckyDurnik recounts why death, common sense, and basic probability have all failed to stop Sniv.

[Scene opens inside The Broken Dagger. The air is thick with pipe smoke, the scent of spilled ale, and the quiet tension of a room full of people who know too much. Around a battered wooden table, a group of thieves, mercenaries, and lowlifes lean in, drinks in hand, all eyes on the speaker. At the center of it all, a scarred, broad-shouldered dwarf with a thick, gray-streaked beard grunts as he sets his tankard down with a heavy thud against the wood.] DURNIK "THE SCAR" VALE (deep, gruff, dwarven accent, slightly exasperated):"Right, listen up, ya sorry lot. I ever tell ye the time Sniv got himself killed? More'n once?" UNKNOWN THIEF (thick street accent, amused, tipsy):"Ain’t no one dies twice, Durnik. Dead’s dead." SECOND THIEF (leaning in, skeptical, half-drunken laugh):"Unless yer tellin’ me the little gob shivved Death in the ribs an’ ran for it." DURNIK (snorts, shaking his head):"Might as well have. Lads, I swear on me own bloody forge—Sniv the Unlucky has died at least six times, an’ the gods themselves can’t be arsed to take ‘im."[Scene shifts—flashback to a crowded marketplace in Eldenhold. A table of cards sits under a ragged awning. A group of angry men glare across the table at a grinning, wide-eyed goblin, his green fingers still holding a very suspicious hand of cards.] SNIV THE UNLUCKY (fast-talking, scratchy goblin accent, smug and slippery):"Now-now-now, boyos, let’s all take a big ol’ breath, yeah? Just ‘cause Sniv happens to be winnin’ don’t mean there’s cheatin’! Pfft—cheatin’? Pfft! Sniv? A gob o’ principle! A real gentle-gob! Wouldn’t dare!" ANGRY GAMBLER (gritted teeth, cracking knuckles, slow and deliberate):"Sniv. You just pulled a four o’ kings. There ain’t no four o’ kings." SNIV (nervous laugh, waving his hands wildly):"Aha! Well, see, dere’s a li’l thing called statistics, yeah? Sometimes, da cards, dey love ya! Sometimes, dey don’t! Ain’t me fault da gods favor ol’ Sniv—"[WHOOSH—suddenly, there’s two Snivs. Identical. Both wide-eyed. Both sweating. Both slowly backing away from the table.] FIRST GAMBLER (blinking, confused, looking between them):"Wot the fuck?" SECOND GAMBLER (growling, drawing a knife):"Ohhh, no no no—he’s doin’ the thing again!" BOTH SNIVS (grinning, talking at once):"Now, real question is—which one ya stabbin’, eh? Could be dis one! Could be dat one! Could be—"[POOF!—both illusions vanish. Silence. A barrel in the corner wiggles slightly.] FIRST GAMBLER (deadpan, unimpressed, glaring at the barrel):"He’s in the feckin’ barrel." SECOND GAMBLER (sighing, raising the knife):"Again?" SNIV (muffled from inside the barrel, nervous chuckle):"Ehhhhh... could be in da barrel! Could be... not! Who’s t’say, really? Reality’s a wibbly ol’ thing, innit—"[THUNK!—dagger slams into the barrel. Loud goblin scream. Cut to black.][Scene shifts back to The Broken Dagger, the whole table roars with laughter.] UNKNOWN THIEF (laughing, slapping the table):"An’ then what happened?!" DURNIK (shaking his head, smirking):"They stuffed ‘im in a sack, tied it shut, an’ threw ‘im in the river. Figured that was the end of it. Two days later, guess who bloody walks into me bar, bone dry?" SECOND THIEF (wide-eyed, stunned):"No feckin’ way." SNIV (suddenly appearing at the table, smug as ever):"Ahhh, see, see, dat one don’t count! Had a backup Sniv—illusion, ‘course!—thrown in first! Meanwhile, real Sniv? Already halfway t’ da docks! Very clever, if I do say so meself!" UNKNOWN THIEF (incredulous, shaking his head):"You had a backup Sniv?" SNIV (grinning, leaning back, looking very proud of himself):"Some folks carry a dagger. Sniv carries extra Snivs." SECOND THIEF (laughing, wheezing):"What da fuck, Sniv?!" SNIV (shrugging, smug):"Eh, what can I say? Luck’s a tricky bastard. So's Sniv." DURNIK "THE SCAR" VALE (grinning, raising his drink):"To da goblin who refuses to stay dead." EVERYONE (cheering, clinking mugs):"To Sniv da Unlucky!"[Scene fades out to laughter, mugs clinking, and the sound of a rowdy tavern as da legend of Sniv da Unlucky continues to grow.]

03Before the campaign · EldenholdThe Drunken Prophet and the Shadow OwlOld Man Griggs argues with Nyx, drinks through a warning, and hears more of the future than any sane man should.

[Scene opens inside The Owl and Ember, a shop full of strange relics, forgotten tomes, and the kind of magic that lingers in the air like a held breath. The room is dim, lit only by scattered candlelight. Shadows flicker unnaturally against the walls. A hunched, ragged elf sits at a cluttered wooden table, a bottle in one hand, a scrap of parchment in the other. His hair is wild, silver strands curling in all directions. His eyes—milky, unfocused—stare through the room like he’s watching something no one else can see.] [Perched atop a precarious stack of books, a sleek, feathered figure watches with glowing violet eyes. Its presence is barely more than a wisp of shadow, its form shifting like mist caught in a slow breeze.]

NYX (soft, shifting, layered like multiple voices speaking at once, teasingly amused): "Driiiinking agaaaain, old maaaaaan? Mmhmhmhm. The wooorld tilts, the bottle swiiiiiirls, and yoooou? You ruuuuuuuun."

OLD MAN GRIGGS (grumbling, waving the bottle, slurring through half his words): "Ain’t runnin’, ya flutterin’ feckin’ cloud! Sittin’! Sittin’ an’ thinkin’! An’ maybe—just maybe!—if the gods weren’t such arseholes, I wouldn’t need t’ drown m’self in the one thing that don’t talk back!" [He glares at the bottle, then squints at it suspiciously.] "Wait. Ya ain’t talkin’ back, are ya? Ain’t one’a them bottles, is it? The talkin’ ones?"

NYX (purring, voice curling around the words like smoke): "Oooooh, pooooor Griggsss. If only you kneeeew which way the tiiiiiides pulled. If only you reeeeemembered whaaaat you fooooorgot."

GRIGGS (snorting, taking a swig): "Pffft! Y’think I wanna remember?! What good’s a memory when it don’t stick right? I remember things that ain’t happened! I forget things that have! I got a head full’a yesterday’s tomorrows, an’ ain’t a godsdamned one of ‘em makes a lick’a sense!"

NYX (mockingly sympathetic, voice shifting between amusement and something darker): "Awwww. Loooost in tiiiiime. The little elf who seeeeees too much and understaaaaands too liiiiittle. Tick-tock, tick-tock, a cloooooock with no haaaands."

GRIGGS (leaning forward suddenly, slamming his bottle on the table, eyes wide and wild): "DON’T Y’START WITH THAT SHITE!" [The room seems to still for just a second, the shadows pressing closer. The fire flickers, struggling against something unseen. Griggs’s hands tremble, not with fear—no, something else. Something deeper.] "I seen the clocks. I know the hands. Ain’t a one of ‘em tellin’ me good news."

NYX (soft laughter, stretching, warping, like an echo caught in a place where sound shouldn’t be): "Ooooooooh, but you assssssked the wrong quesssstion, didn’t yoooooou?"

GRIGGS (slowly, cautiously, almost like he doesn’t want to say it, voice dropping to a whisper): "…Do I win?"

NYX (voice curling in delight, whispering through the walls, the ceiling, the floor, as if it’s everywhere and nowhere at once): "Ooooooooh, Griggsssss. The better quesssstion issss…" [The candles flicker. The shadows stretch.] "Have yoooooou ever loooooost?"

[Silence.] [The fire crackles again, as if whatever had pressed against it finally let go. Griggs leans back in his chair, the bottle in his hand shaking slightly. He takes a slow, deliberate drink, staring at nothing.]

GRIGGS (muttering under his breath, to no one, or maybe to someone who isn’t listening anymore): "Feckin’ hate when y’do that."

[Somewhere in the darkness of the shop, unseen by anyone, Nyx’s laughter lingers just a moment too long before fading into the quiet.]

04Before the campaign · EldenholdShut Up and Eat Yer Fuckin’ SoupA wounded assassin seeks refuge at the Gilded Gryphon and discovers Mara’s hospitality is not optional.

[Scene opens in The Gilded Gryphon, the warm glow of the hearth casting flickering light against wooden beams. The scent of roasting meat and thick stew fills the air, cutting through the ever-present tang of ale and sweat. The night’s usual patrons—off-duty guards, traveling merchants, and a few too many rogues—mutter amongst themselves, the quiet hum of conversation only broken by the occasional bark of laughter.]

[Then, the door swings open with a creaking groan.]

[A man stumbles inside. He’s hooded, dripping with rain, and leaving a trail of something darker across the floorboards. His breath is ragged, his hands clutching at his side, and even through the dim light, the coppery scent of blood is impossible to miss.]

GARRUK STONEFIST (deep, steady, unimpressed, Half-Orc bouncer voice): "Ah, fuck. Not this again."

[The massive half-orc at the door doesn’t reach for his weapon. Doesn’t need to. He just crosses his arms, his scarred tusked face unreadable as he watches the newcomer with that same deadpan look he gives every idiot who thinks they can start trouble in the Gryphon.]

MARA "IRONSPOON" THALDRUM (loud, commanding, gruff dwarven accent, doesn’t take shit from anyone): "Oi! You bleedin’ on my fuckin’ floor?!"

[The man stiffens, but before he can answer, a heavy iron ladle flies across the room and clangs off the side of his hood.]

MARA (grumbling, already storming forward, wiping her hands on her apron): "First the rain, now fuckin’ blood. Godsdamn mess, this city."

WOUNDED ASSASSIN (strained, breathless, slightly panicked): "I—I need a place to sit."

MARA (snorting, shoving a chair toward him so hard it nearly topples): "Yeah? Y’need a place t’sit? Well I need folks not drippin’ their fuckin’ insides all over my nice clean tavern! Guess neither of us are gettin’ what we want tonight, eh?"

[The assassin barely makes it into the chair before Mara is already yanking a bowl from the counter and slamming it in front of him. A steaming, thick stew—rich, meaty, fragrant, and served with all the subtlety of a warhammer to the face.]

MARA (arms crossed, glaring): "Yer eatin’."

WOUNDED ASSASSIN (blinking, confused, wheezing slightly): "What?"

MARA (leaning in, voice lowering, dangerous): "Ye heard me, boy. Ye sit there, ye shut the fuck up, an’ ye eat the godsdamn soup. Cause if ye die in my bar, I ain’t haulin’ yer corpse out meself. I’ll make the whole Gryphon eat around ye ‘til someone gets fuckin’ tired of it and drags yer sorry arse into the street."

[The assassin hesitates. Then, slowly, stiffly, he reaches for the spoon.]

GARRUK (watching from the door, deadpan, amused): "Probably yer best option, mate."

[The assassin takes a bite. His hands are shaking, but the warmth of the food stills them, even if just for a moment. It’s damn good stew. Probably the best thing he’s eaten in weeks. He swallows, glancing up to see Mara still standing there, arms crossed, still glaring at him like she’s daring him to die in front of her.]

WOUNDED ASSASSIN (muttering, between bites): "This is… really good."

MARA (grumbling, heading back toward the kitchen): "Fuckin’ course it is. Ain’t servin’ shite in my Gryphon."

GARRUK (chuckling, shaking his head, leaning against the wall): "You make a mess, she’ll probably stab you herself, y’know. And she’ll feed you first. Outta respect."

MARA (calling over her shoulder, voice full of dry humor): "Yer damn right I will!"

[The assassin just keeps eating, deciding, for once in his miserable fucking life, to do the smart thing. He doesn’t run. Doesn’t argue. Doesn’t try to explain himself.

He just eats the godsdamn soup.

05Before the campaign · EldenholdAin’t No Honest Coin in This CitySilas Crowne asks a magistrate to erase Kaela Voss from the city’s ledgers, using the traditional currencies of charm and blackmail.

[Scene opens in The Silver Stag, a high-end wine house nestled deep in Eldenhold’s merchant quarter. The air carries the faintest trace of sweetened pipe smoke, expensive perfume, and hushed conversations spoken with caution. This is where the powerful come to drink and pretend they aren’t making deals with devils.] [At a secluded corner booth, away from curious ears, Magistrate Halvar Greythorn sits in perfect composure. His navy robes are crisp, his silvered hair immaculately kept. Across from him, lounging like he owns the place, is Silas Crowne—half-buttoned fine tunic, dark curls tousled just enough to look intentional, a lazy smirk playing on his lips as he swirls his wine.] MAGISTRATE GREYTHORN (calm, clipped, precise): "You requested this meeting, Crowne. I assume it is not for my company." SILAS CROWNE (grinning, smooth, teasing): "Oh, but Halvar, your company is what keeps me coming back." GREYTHORN (raising an unimpressed brow, deadpan): "Get to the point." SILAS (mock sigh, setting his wine down, leaning in slightly): "Fine, fine. No sense in dressing it up. I need a name erased from your records." [A pause. Greythorn’s fingers tap lightly against the stem of his glass. He does not blink.] GREYTHORN (voice steady, unimpressed): "Do you." SILAS (grinning wider, watching him closely): "Oh, yes. And you’re going to do it, too. Because if you don’t, a certain noble house is about to have a very bad month." [Silence. The air between them shifts—something unspoken settling into the space like the weight of a drawn blade.] GREYTHORN (quiet, considering, unreadable): "Who." SILAS (leans back, still grinning, but there’s something sharp in his voice now): "Kaela Voss." [A beat. Greythorn does not react outwardly. But there is a pause—the kind that means something.] GREYTHORN (measured, slow, thoughtful): "Bounty hunter. Former mercenary. Prone to drinking when she thinks no one’s watching." SILAS (amused, raising a brow): "You do keep good notes." GREYTHORN (finally taking a slow sip of his wine, voice unreadable): "Her name is in my ledgers for a reason, Crowne. Removing it does not erase what she’s done." SILAS (soft chuckle, shaking his head): "Oh, come on, Halvar. We both know she ain’t really in there for what she’s done. She’s in there for who she pissed off." GREYTHORN (calm, impassive): "The laws of Valeris do not bend to noble vendettas." SILAS (grinning, gesturing with his wine glass): "Ohhh, no, but the people enforcing them sure as hell do. You don’t really care about her bounty. But I know for a fact you do care about keeping order. And let’s just say that if Kaela’s name stays in that ledger, things might get…messy." [Greythorn watches him. His face does not betray a single thought, but his fingers tap the glass again—once, twice. Calculating.] GREYTHORN (low, cold): "You’re gambling with your own life, Crowne." SILAS (mock offense, hand over his chest): "Oh, Magistrate, you wound me. You know I only gamble when I’m holding a winning hand." GREYTHORN (exhaling, setting his glass down, deciding): "One name. No more." SILAS (grinning, standing, fixing his coat): "Pleasure doing business with you, as always." GREYTHORN (watching him, voice calm but absolute): "One day, Crowne, someone will make you fold." SILAS (laughing, walking away, tossing a few coins onto the table for the wine): "Maybe. But not today." [As Silas disappears into the city, Greythorn watches him go, jaw tight, fingers pressing against his glass. He exhales slowly, then picks up his wine again, taking a long, slow sip.] [Outside, the city churns, and somewhere, Kaela Voss just became a free woman—whether she wanted to or not.]

06Before the campaign · EldenholdThe Chicken HeistA simple theft involving a chicken becomes exactly as dignified as everything else in Eldenhold.

(Sniv da Unlucky, Renna "Swiftfingers" Lorne, an’ Garruk Stonefist – A Stupidly Overcomplicated Plan)[Scene opens behind the Eldenhold marketplace, dead of night. The moon hangs high, silver light bouncing off stacks of crates, barrels, and the occasional rat skittering past. In the farthest corner, under a thick tarp, sits a large wooden cage—inside, a dozen shadow-feathered chickens, imported from gods-know-where. They shuffle around, cooing softly, blissfully unaware they’re about to become part of something incredibly stupid.][Crouched nearby, hidden in the dark, is Sniv da Unlucky, bouncing on his heels, grinning like a gob who just found free gold. Next to him, arms crossed, tail flicking slow and deliberate, is Renna "Swiftfingers" Lorne—looking very unimpressed.] RENNA (low, irritated, tail twitching):"Sniv. Ya gotta tell me… why, outta all da godsdamned things in dis city, am I out ‘ere in da dead o’ night plannin’ a fuckin’ chicken heist?" SNIV (grinning, fast-talking goblin voice):"‘Cause dese ain’t jus’ chickens, Renna! Dey shadow-feathered! Imported all da way from da fuckin’ east, yeah? Fancy nobles pay stupid gold fer ‘em! An’ all we gotta do is grab da birds, find a buyer, an’ boom! We rollin’ in coin!" RENNA (eyeing him, unimpressed):"An’ ya real sure ‘bout dis buyer?" SNIV (nods real fast, looking smug):"Ohhh yeah, real fancy noble type, all da way up in da Royal District! Wants a big feast t’ impress da court—real high society shite, yeah? Look, dis is easy money!" RENNA (narrowing her eyes, tail flicking faster now):"An’ what happens when dis real fancy noble realizes he just paid a fortune fer regular fuckin’ chickens dat ya dyed black?" SNIV (pauses, blinks, shrugs, still grinning):"Well… by then, Sniv’s real far away, drinkin’ on a beach somewhere, yeah?" RENNA (shaking her head, muttering):"I swear, I don’t even know why I put up wit’ ya."[Before Renna can say more, there's a loud thud as something big shifts nearby. The two freeze.][Stepping out from behind a stack of crates, arms crossed and looking very unimpressed, is Garruk Stonefist, the Gilded Gryphon’s half-orc bouncer. He watches them for a long moment, his scarred tusked face unreadable.] GARRUK (deep, slow, unamused):"The fuck are you two doin’?" SNIV (jumping, spinning, hands up, talking way too fast):"AHA! Garruk! My favorite half-orc! My good friend! My—uhhh, ya see, dis is a perfectly legal operation!" GARRUK (staring, flatly):"Uh-huh." SNIV (nodding rapidly, grinning, still lying terribly):"Y’see, me an’ Renna—we work here! Guardin’ da chickens, yeah? Real important job, dangerous work, lotta criminals ‘round ‘ere, ya know—" RENNA (interrupting, rubbing her temples, irritated):"Sniv. Shut da fuck up." GARRUK (sighing, pinching the bridge of his nose):"Alright. Lemme guess. You’re stealin’ the fuckin’ chickens." SNIV (grinning, nervous, whispering):"…Maaaaybe." GARRUK (rolling his eyes, arms still crossed):"I don’t get you, Sniv. You can cheat, lie, an’ trick your way outta damn near anything. So why the fuck are you tryin’ to steal birds?" SNIV (grinning, looking proud of himself):"‘Cause chickens don’t fight back! Ez money!" [As if on cue, there’s a sudden violent flurry of feathers and screeching clucks from the cage. A single chicken explodes out from under the tarp, its beady little eyes burning with unholy rage.][Silence. Then—Garruk, Renna, and Sniv all watch as the meanest-looking shadow-feathered rooster they have ever seen glares at them.] RENNA (slowly, tail flicking, taking a step back):"Sniv… why’s it lookin’ at us like that?" SNIV (sweating, forcing a nervous grin):"Ah. See, dis is a minor setback. Sniv may have forgot t’ mention—" GARRUK (crossing his arms, flatly):"What. The fuck. Did you do." SNIV (laughing nervously, stepping behind Renna):"Hehehehe… soooo, small problem, mighta accidentally bought a cursed batch o’ birds—" RENNA (whipping her head around, eyes wide):"YOU WHAT?!" [The rooster lets out an unholy, guttural screech. The air shudders. The other chickens burst from their cage—but they don’t just run. Oh no. These fuckers FLY.][Chaos erupts. The chickens start dive-bombing the trio, pecking, clawing, and screeching like feathered demons. One lands directly on Sniv’s face.] SNIV (muffled screaming, flailing):"AGHHH! IT’S IN ME HAIR! IT’S IN ME HAIR!" GARRUK (dodging a chicken, growling):"What the fuck kinda birds are these?!" RENNA (hissing, swiping at a flying chicken, furious):"Oh, for fuck’s sake, Sniv! YOU’RE GONNA DIE BECAUSE OF FUCKIN’ CHICKENS!" [Sniv finally wrenches the demon-chicken off his head, sending it flying into a stack of crates. He pants, disheveled, feathers sticking out of his coat, then gives them both an awkward, guilty grin.] SNIV (laughing nervously):"Soooo… heist ain’t goin’ great." [A long beat. Then—Garruk just sighs, rubs his face, and turns around.] GARRUK (walking off, grumbling):"I’m too sober for this fuckin’ city."

07Before the campaign · EldenholdThe Fuckin’ Bird KnowsA suspicious bird knows far too much, and the people around it handle that information with their usual grace.

(Pip Thistledown & Nyx – A Game of Secrets)

[Scene opens in The Gilded Gryphon, late at night. The tavern is quieter than usual—most of the regulars have stumbled home, and only the die-hard drinkers and a few off-duty guards remain. The fire burns low, casting flickering shadows across the wooden beams. At a corner table, slouched over a half-empty tankard, sits Pip Thistledown, town crier, chronic drinker, and absolute disaster of a gossip.]

[Across from him, perched atop the back of a chair, is Nyx—a shadowy, owl-like familiar with glowing violet eyes, its form flickering unnaturally as if it’s not entirely here. Pip glares at it, rubbing his temples like he’s about to get into an argument he already knows he’ll lose.]

PIP THISTLEDOWN (drunk, irritated, halfling Cockney accent): "Look, I dunno how ye do it, but I don’t like it, y’hear? I don’t like it one fuckin’ bit."

NYX (soft, shifting, layered voices, teasingly amused): "Ooooooh, but it likes yoooou, Piiiiiip. It whiiiispers, it siiiiings, it dreeeams in the dreeeeams of mennnnn…"

PIP (groaning, taking another swig of ale): "See? That’s the shit I’m talkin’ about. That right there. You talk like a feckin’ haunted music box an’ it ain’t normal!"

NYX (tilting its head, slow, deliberate, voice stretching in mock thoughtfulness): "Mmmm… normal issssss a straaaaange woooord, liiiiittle crier. Mmmmmmuch like… ‘seeeeeecret’."

[Pip stiffens slightly, lowering his tankard just enough to shoot Nyx a wary look.]

PIP (suspicious, narrowing his eyes): "Wot kinda secret we talkin’ ‘bout ‘ere?"

NYX (voice curling around the words, like a whisper sliding along a knife’s edge): "The ooooones yooooou shouuuuuuld not knooooooow. The ooooones yooooou speak too muuuuuch oooooof."

PIP (pausing, suddenly a little less drunk, a little more nervous): "…You been listenin’ t’ me?"

NYX (soft laughter, stretching, unsettling, as if the room itself is laughing with it): "Weeee listen to everyoooooone."

[Pip’s grip on his tankard tightens. He glances around the tavern, suddenly unsure if he’s alone with Nyx, or if something else is in the shadows, watching.]

PIP (low, muttering, trying to keep his voice steady): "Alright… fine. Then lemme ask ye somethin’. Wot exactly do ye know?"

NYX (purring, delighted, voice lowering, curling around the answer like a cat playing with a mouse): "Oooooooh, soooo much. Mmmm…. sooo maaaany names…"

PIP (tightening his jaw, shifting in his chair): "Names, eh?"

NYX (tilting its head, whispering each name like a breath against the back of Pip’s neck): "Mmmmm… Lord Valterre… The Crimson Paaaact… The Gilded Ledgerrrrrr…"

[Pip’s blood runs cold. He sits up straighter, his hand gripping the table to keep himself steady.]

PIP (serious now, hushed, low): "Who told you that?"

NYX (soft, echoing laughter, whispering through the tavern rafters like the wind itself is speaking): "Aaaand the liiiiittle crier asks the wroooooong queeeeestioooooon."

PIP (leaning forward, voice more desperate now): "Tell me, you creepy feathered fuck, who the fuck told you that?!"

NYX (the laughter fades, voice turning eerily calm, too calm, a whisper just for Pip): "Nobodyyyyy. Noooooo one. It isssss not knooooown. It isssss remembered."

[Silence.]

[The fire crackles. The air in the tavern feels heavier now. The shadows stretch just a little longer than they should.]

PIP (barely a whisper, shaken): "…Fuckin’ ‘ell."

NYX (soft chuckle, fading, voice slipping away like mist): "Yoooooooooou taaaaaaalk tooooooo muuuch, liiiiittle crrrrrrrrier."

[And then, in the space of a blink, Nyx is gone.]

[Pip swallows hard, pushing back from the table. He throws down a few coins, nods to the barkeep, and walks out the door as fast as his legs will take him.]

[Outside, the city of Eldenhold is still awake, still moving, still full of whispers. And somewhere, in the dark corners of the night, the fuckin’ bird knows too much.]

08Before the campaign · EldenholdDa Fuck Did I Just Buy?Sniv finds a bargain that even he recognizes as catastrophically suspicious—eventually.

(Sniv the Unlucky & Rivak the Hollow – A Shady Deal Gone Wrong)[Scene opens in a dim alley behind the Iron Oath Armory, where the rain drips steadily off the eaves of the surrounding buildings. The alley stinks of damp wood, metal shavings, and the faint acrid bite of something unnatural. A small goblin, his cloak patched in too many places to count, shifts nervously from foot to foot. Across from him, standing far too still, is a tall, slender tiefling, his deep violet skin and curling black horns nearly blending into the darkness.] SNIV THE UNLUCKY (fast-talking, scratchy goblin accent, paranoid but smug):"Alright, alright, so Sniv ‘eard ya got da good shit, yeah? Real powerful stuff. Stuff dat… y’know, makes a gob richer, stronger… harder t’ kill, yeah?" RIVAK THE HOLLOW (smooth, slow, unsettlingly calm, lightly exotic accent):"Mmm… Sniv. You have such… specific requests. Always looking to tip the scales, yes?" SNIV (grinning, rubbing his hands together):"Oi, Sniv’s gotta think ahead! World’s fulla danger, mate! Assassins, bounty hunters, angry husbands—I needs insurance! So wot ye got fer me?"[Rivak reaches into his coat and pulls out a small, palm-sized artifact—a dull, blackened gemstone, swirling faintly with a sickly green mist. The moment it’s exposed to the air, the rain hisses as it touches the stone, evaporating into a thin wisp of something darker than steam.] RIVAK (soft smile, watching Sniv carefully):"Ahhh… This. This, little goblin, is exactly what you are looking for." SNIV (grinning, eagerly reaching for it):"Ha! Now we talkin’! Alright, how much we talkin’ ‘ere?" RIVAK (tilting his head, voice dripping with amusement):"Mmm… For you, Sniv? A steal at a mere 150 gold." SNIV (immediate shift in tone, horrified):"Da fuck kinda goblin you take me for?! 150?! Wot’s it do, kill folks for me?!" RIVAK (chuckling, flicking his tail idly):"Oh no, Sniv. You will do the killing. This? This will simply… help."[Sniv squints at the gem, his excitement flickering slightly into something warier. He sniffs, shifting his stance.] SNIV (suspicious, poking the gem lightly with a claw):"Y’know, uh… wot’s in it? Feels… kinda… whispery." RIVAK (watching closely, still smiling):"Mmm… The soul of a very old creature. Bound. Trapped. Hungry."[Sniv stops. His ears twitch.] SNIV (slowly, cautiously):"Hungry for wot, exactly?" RIVAK (soft, velvety, unsettlingly calm):"You, of course."[Silence. The gem in Rivak’s hand shifts slightly, like something inside it is pressing against the edges. The mist within it pulses, swirling faster, reacting to Sniv’s presence.] SNIV (freezing, eye twitching):"…Da fuck did ye just try t’ sell me?" RIVAK (smiling wider, watching him squirm):"A bargain, little goblin. This gem grants its bearer impossible luck. It will twist fate, bend the odds, let you escape what should not be escaped. Stabbed in the gut? Misses an artery. Fall off a roof? Land in a cart of hay. Poison in your drink? Somehow, your glass never reaches your lips."[Sniv stares at the gem, then at Rivak. Then back at the gem. His expression is one of a man watching a snake smile at him.] SNIV (slowly, processing, eyes narrowing):"An’ wot happens… when it’s done?" RIVAK (soft laughter, delighted):"Mmm… That’s the fun part, Sniv. It doesn’t stop saving you… until it is full." SNIV (blink. Pause. Expression shifting rapidly from greedy to horrified):"…Full o’ wot, exactly?"* RIVAK (grinning, eyes glinting in the dim light):"Your near-misses. Your second chances. Your lucky breaks. Every time it saves your life, it feeds. And when it has taken enough, when your luck has been pushed too far… it collects." SNIV (staring at him, quiet, then bursting into frantic laughter):"HA! HA! FUCKIN’ HA! So lemme get dis right—ye tryna sell ol’ Sniv a fuckin’ death gem dat keeps ‘im alive just long enough t’ drag ‘im t’ some eldritch hell?!" RIVAK (shrugging, nonchalant):"You did say you wanted to avoid dying, yes?" SNIV (hissing, waving his arms, already backing up):"I meant wit’ me own skill, ya slithery fuck! Not by borrowin’ time off me own corpse!"[Rivak sighs, slipping the gem back into his pocket, as if he hadn’t just tried to sell Sniv a death sentence with a delayed fuse.] RIVAK (smooth, unaffected):"Ah, well. Not all are willing to pay the price for survival." SNIV (scowling, shoving his hands in his pockets, muttering to himself):"Gods dammit, Sniv. Dis is why ye don’t trust fuckin’ tieflings." RIVAK (smirking, flicking his tail, turning away):"Oh, come now. Somebody will buy it. And when you see them still standing while others fall? You’ll wonder, Sniv. You’ll wonder what your price should have been."[Sniv watches him go, scowling. He glances down at his own hands, flexing his fingers. He’s made plenty of bad decisions in his life, but that? That would’ve been the worst.] SNIV (grumbling, walking away):"Feckin’ tieflings, feckin’ cursed gems, feckin’ whispers in da dark—ain’t no feckin’ way Sniv fallin’ for dat shite."[He takes a few steps. The rain falls steadily around him. And then—just for a second—he swears he hears a voice in the back of his mind, whispering his name.]

09Before the campaign · EldenholdAin’t No Heroes in EldenholdKaela Voss and Old Man Griggs share rain, whiskey, and memories neither of them wants.

(Kaela Voss & Old Man Griggs – A Past They’d Rather Forget)

[Scene opens in a narrow alleyway just outside the Gilded Gryphon. The air is thick with the smell of damp stone, spilled beer, and the ever-present stink of the city. Rain drizzles lazily from the rooftops, soaking the cobblestones. A lone figure slouches against the wall, half-hidden in the shadows—a ragged old elf, his wild silver hair plastered to his forehead, his once-fine robes stained and tattered. A nearly empty bottle of cheap whiskey dangles from his fingers. His breath is slow, steady, but his milky white eyes stare into something distant—something that isn’t there.]

[From the main road, Kaela Voss, a broad-shouldered half-orc bounty hunter, strides through the rain. She looks tired, like someone who's had to do one too many jobs just to survive. She stops, her golden eyes narrowing slightly at the sight of Griggs, but she doesn’t leave.]

KAELA VOSS (low, gruff, unimpressed, tired of this shit): "Figures. Raining, late at night, an’ I find ya piss-drunk in a fuckin’ alley again."

OLD MAN GRIGGS (grinning, slurring slightly, but far too lucid for a drunk man): "Ahh, Voss… knew ye’d show up. Rain always brings out the ghosts, don’t it? Haaah. Even when ye ain’t lookin’ fer ‘em."

KAELA (rolling her eyes, crossing her arms): "If you dragged me out here just to talk outta your ass, I swear, Griggs—"

GRIGGS (soft chuckle, waving the bottle, voice lowering slightly): "Nah. Nah. Jus’ thinkin’. Reflectin’. Y’ever wonder why it’s always you that finds me?"

[Kaela exhales sharply through her nose, already regretting stopping. She steps forward, reaching for the bottle in Griggs’ hand. He pulls it away just before she grabs it, laughing softly.]

KAELA (gritted teeth, annoyed): "I ain’t wonderin’ about shit, Griggs. I just know if you drop dead out here, I’m the one they’re gonna call to haul your scrawny ass to the undertaker."

GRIGGS (grinning, but his voice is quieter now, slower, more knowing): "Hahhh. Y’know, fer someone who talks so much about not lookin’ back, ye sure do a lotta checkin’ over yer shoulder."

KAELA (scowling, voice dropping): "You wanna get to the fuckin’ point, or you wanna keep dancin’ around it?"

GRIGGS (tapping his temple, voice lowering): "Point’s already made, lass. Ye just don’t like hearin’ it. Ye got a past that don’t sit right. An’ so do I."

[Kaela tenses slightly. She looks down at him—really looks at him. The wild-eyed, rambling old elf. The man everyone calls a drunken madman. The man she knows better than to take lightly.]

KAELA (gruff, but quieter now): "You remember somethin’, don’t you?"

GRIGGS (leaning forward slightly, grin fading just a little): "I remember a lot o’ things, Voss. Past that never was. Future that might be. But ye wanna know what I remember most?"

KAELA (reluctant, jaw tightening): "No."

GRIGGS (ignoring her, eyes unfocused, voice dropping lower): "I remember a job. A bloody one. South o’ the city, out past the mills. Folk didn’t ask too many questions about why ye were there. Y’know what I remember most, though?"

[Kaela doesn’t answer. She doesn’t need to. Her jaw is clenched so tight, she could break a tusk. But Griggs, in that slow, knowing way of his, just nods to himself, like he already knows what she ain’t saying.]

GRIGGS (soft, almost a whisper): "I remember a girl. Real small. Maybe twelve. Hid real good, but not good enough. An’ I remember a mercenary standin’ over her, holdin’ an axe, lookin’ like she weren’t sure whether t’ put it down or put it through her skull."

[Silence.]

[Kaela takes a slow breath. Her hands curl into fists at her sides.]

KAELA (low, dangerous, controlled rage): "Stop."

GRIGGS (leaning back, grinning again, but it’s softer now): "Ahhh. Thought so."

[The rain patters gently against the cobblestones. Somewhere, a distant bell tolls the hour. Neither of them moves.]

KAELA (gritted teeth, barely holding back): "You don’t know shit, Griggs."

GRIGGS (chuckling, taking another drink, closing his eyes like he’s listening to something she can’t hear): "Nah. I know plenty. But I ain’t gonna tell it. Ain’t my story to tell, lass. Just wanted t’ see if ye still carry it."

[Kaela stares at him for a long moment. Then, without another word, she turns and starts walking back toward the Gryphon.]

GRIGGS (calling after her, laughing softly): "Ain’t no heroes in Eldenhold, Kaela! Just folk tryin’ real hard t’ pretend!"

[Kaela doesn’t stop. Doesn’t turn. Just keeps walking, her shoulders tense, her fists tight. The rain keeps falling. Griggs takes another long drink, then closes his eyes again. Somewhere in his mind, the past plays on repeat. But maybe, just maybe, this time he’ll forget it in the morning.]

10Before the campaign · EldenholdAin’t Just a Man’s GameFour of Eldenhold’s most dangerous women sit down for cards, coin, and a weaponized amount of banter.

(Mara Thaldrum, Renna "Swiftfingers" Lorne, Selene Varro, and Kaela Voss – A Game of Cards, Coin, and Sharp Tongues)

[Scene opens inside The Gilded Gryphon, well past midnight. Most of the usual crowd has either stumbled home, passed out drunk, or lost their last coin and left in a foul mood. But in the far corner of the tavern, a single table remains lively—four women, all very different, yet somehow all seated together in what can only be described as a powder keg waiting for a match.

The candlelight flickers over their faces—one gruff and weathered, one sleek and sharp, one shrouded in shadow, and one looking like she’s seen far too much bullshit tonight. In the center of the table, a deck of cards and a growing pile of coin sit between them.

RENNA "SWIFTFINGERS" LORNE (smooth, playful, purring accent, flicking a card between her fingers): "Ahhh, now this? This is a beautiful fuckin’ hand."

KAELA VOSS (gruff, deadpan, unimpressed): "You say that every round, Lorne."

RENNA (smirking, flicking an ear): "Aye, ‘cause it’s true every round. The cards love me."

MARA THALDRUM (gruff dwarven barkeep, grumbling, glaring at her hand): "Feckin’ horseshite. Ain’t no such thing as ‘luck’ in cards—jus’ cheatin’ an’ the poor bastards who can’t spot it."

SELENE VARRO (soft, calm, unsettlingly composed, voice like silk over steel): "Interesting perspective, Thaldrum. Would you care to prove it?"

[Mara squints at her, then at Renna, then at the cards. Then back at Renna. Her eyes narrow slightly.]

MARA (gruff, testing the waters): "Lorne. Hands on the fuckin’ table."

[Renna’s grin doesn’t fade, but she lifts her hands, spreading her fingers wide.]

RENNA (mock offense, gasping slightly): "Mara, please! What kinda rogue ye take me for?"

KAELA (dry, shuffling her own cards, not looking up): "The cheatin’ kind."

RENNA (laughing, flicking her tail, unbothered): "Aye, well. Fair enough."

SELENE (watching, voice low, controlled): "Cheating is only a crime if you’re caught."

MARA (grumbling, crossing her arms): "Then it’s a feckin’ miracle this one ain’t sittin’ in Dunholm’s Hold by now."

RENNA (grinning, stretching, smug as hell): "Ain’t luck, Mara. Just skill."

KAELA (raising a brow, dry, unimpressed): "That wot you call slippin’ a card from yer sleeve earlier?"

[Silence. All eyes turn to Renna. She freezes, ears twitching, then her grin widens. She reaches into her sleeve and deliberately pulls out a single card—the Ace of Crowns—and lays it on the table.]

RENNA (laughing, unbothered): "Ahhh, now that? That was just for fun."

MARA (rolling her eyes, shaking her head): "Fuckin’ tabaxi."

[Selene, who has been watching quietly, finally picks up her cards and tilts her head slightly.]

SELENE (calm, measured, lightly amused): "And yet, none of you seem inclined to fold."

KAELA (grinning slightly now, leaning forward, resting an arm on the table): "Because if we walk away now, it means lettin’ her win."

MARA (gruff, throwing in more coin): "Aye. An’ I ain’t leavin’ till I make the smug bastard earn it."

[Renna purrs in delight, flicking another coin into the pot.]

RENNA (grinning, lazy, stretching again): "Ahhh, now that’s the spirit, ladies. Playin’ just got interesting."

SELENE (watching the board, quiet, unreadable): "I do enjoy an interesting game."

[The fire crackles. The candlelight flickers. The stakes rise. In the corner of the Gryphon, the four most dangerous women in the city smile at each other over a pile of gold—not one of them willing to back down.]

11Before the campaign · EldenholdA Light That Shouldn’t Be ThereGriggs brings Sister Myra a warning about an impossible light—and the thing that may be knocking from the other side.

(Old Man Griggs & Sister Myra Fenwick – A Drunken Madman & A Skeptical Healer)

[Scene opens outside Valeris Church in the dead of night. The streets are slick with rain, reflecting the dim torchlight from the temple’s entrance. The city sleeps, but the quiet here is thick—the kind that doesn’t feel peaceful, just waiting.

A lone figure slouches on the cold stone steps, a nearly empty bottle of whiskey dangling from his fingers. His ragged cloak clings damply to his thin frame, his wild silver hair hanging over his face, shadowing his clouded, unfocused eyes.

Sister Myra Fenwick, still half-dressed in her priestess robes over the practical armor she always wears beneath, steps out of the temple’s entrance. She lets out a slow, measured breath as she sees who’s waiting for her. Again.]

SISTER MYRA FENWICK (clipped, unimpressed, too tired for this shit): "Griggs, if you’re about to tell me the sky’s falling again, I swear on the gods—"

OLD MAN GRIGGS (grinning, slurring, but not as drunk as he acts): "Nah, nah, s’not the sky, lass. Not this time."

MYRA (raising a brow, crossing her arms): "Oh, wonderful. What terrifying bullshit am I supposed to lose sleep over this time?"

GRIGGS (leaning back against the steps, staring up at nothing, voice slower now, quieter): "A light, lass. A light that shouldn’t be there."

MYRA (frowning, tilting her head slightly): "A light? In the sky?"

GRIGGS (shaking his head, tapping his temple, voice lowering like it’s something he’s afraid to say too loud): "No. No, s’not in the sky. Ain’t above us, ain’t below us, neither. It’s just… there. Way, way out past where anything’s supposed t’ be."

[A pause. Myra watches him carefully. She’s humoring him, but… there’s something different this time. Something too steady about the way he’s speaking. He’s usually a rambling mess. This? This is something else.]

MYRA (slowly, arms still crossed, but her voice softer now): "Alright. Say I believe you. What’s so bad about a light?"

GRIGGS (exhaling, shaking his head, voice distant): "‘Cause I know it’s there, but I ain’t supposed to. Ain’t anyone supposed to. It’s a place that shouldn’t exist. A lighthouse that don’t guide ships—guides somethin’ else."

MYRA (watching him now, no longer just humoring him): "Guides what, Griggs?"

[Silence. Griggs swallows, his grip tightening around the whiskey bottle. His fingers tap against the glass, a slow, nervous rhythm.]

GRIGGS (voice barely above a whisper): "Somethin’ knockin’."

MYRA (frowning, stepping closer): "Knocking?"

GRIGGS (nodding slowly, staring past her, staring at something only he can see): "Aye. Real patient-like. Knockin’ nice an’ soft, just waitin’. Has been fer a long time. But lately? Lately, it’s knockin’ harder."

MYRA (measured, watching him carefully, voice steady): "And what happens if it gets in?"

[Griggs blinks. His throat bobs slightly as he swallows.]

GRIGGS (soft, hollow, like he’s already seen it happen): "Ain’t a door, lass. Can’t just shut it."

MYRA (expression darkening, stepping forward, voice firmer): "Then what is it, Griggs?!"

GRIGGS (grinning, but it’s tired, a smile that doesn’t reach his eyes): "A thread, lass. One loose stitch in a real old tapestry. Ye ever pull a thread, just t’see what happens?"

MYRA (exhaling, running a hand through her damp hair, muttering): "Shit."

GRIGGS (laughing softly, shaking his head, taking another drink): "Aye. Shit."

[Silence. The city around them hasn’t changed—the streets are still wet, the torches still flicker, the world still moves. But something between them is different now. Myra watches him, watches the way his hands shake slightly when he’s not holding something, watches the way he keeps staring out at nothing, the way his breath slows like he’s listening for something far away.]

MYRA (steady, measured, after a long pause): "You really believe this, don’t you?"

GRIGGS (chuckling, shaking his head, but there’s no humor in it): "Aye, lass. I wish I didn’t."

MYRA (scoffing, looking away, muttering to herself): "Gods, why do I even talk to you?"

GRIGGS (grinning again, tapping the side of his head): "Cause ye know I ain’t wrong."

MYRA (rolling her shoulders, sighing, turning back toward the temple): "Next time you show up on my doorstep, you better be bringin’ less doom and more whiskey."

GRIGGS (raising his bottle in a lazy toast): "Hahh. Aye, I’ll drink to that."

[Myra disappears into the temple, leaving Griggs alone again. He sits there for a while, tapping his bottle against the stone, the same slow rhythm.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

And for just a moment, as the rain starts to fall again, he swears he hears something knock back.]

12Before the campaign · EldenholdThe Fall of the Gilded LedgerA book holding Eldenhold’s bribes and secrets vanishes, and half the city quietly reaches for a knife.

[Scene opens in a dimly lit backroom of The Gilded Gryphon. The room smells of old parchment, pipe smoke, and spilled ale. A group of off-duty mercenaries and traders gather around a storyteller, a shadowed figure known only as "The Chronicler." They lean in, eager for the tale.]

NARRATOR (The Chronicler, smooth, deliberate): "Now, if you’ve spent any time in Eldenhold, you know the golden rule: Gold talks, but secrets? Secrets buy you power."

"And no one—no one—held more secrets than the man who kept the city’s ledgers."

"This is the story of the bookkeeper who held Eldenhold in his palm… and how he lost it all in a single night."

[Scene shifts—Eldenhold’s grand marketplace, early morning bustle. A well-dressed man in fine robes walks briskly through the square. He carries a small, leather-bound ledger tucked tightly under his arm.] MAGISTER HALVAR GREYTHORN (formal, clipped, calculating): "We keep the city running, gentlemen. Order, law, and coin—these are the foundations of civilization. Remove one, and the rest crumble."

SILAS CROWNE (charming, amused, dangerous): (leaning casually against a marble pillar, smirking) "Order, law, and coin? That’s adorable, Greythorn. I would have said ‘coin, blackmail, and a well-placed knife.’ But we’re all entitled to our philosophies."

[The two men exchange looks—one a hardened magistrate, the other a rogue who thrives on whispered deals. The tension between them is palpable.]

NARRATOR (smirking): "See, Magistrate Greythorn thought he controlled Eldenhold because he controlled the courts. But Silas? Silas knew better. The real power wasn’t in the throne or the law."

"It was in the Gilded Ledger—a book full of every bribe, every illicit deal, every noble who had paid for silence."

"And one week ago, it went missing."

[Scene shifts—The Broken Dagger, low candlelight, hushed conversations. Durnik "The Scar" Vale leans against the bar, arms crossed. Across from him, a jittery goblin, Lazari "Rat" Fenwick, wipes sweat from his brow.] DURNIK "THE SCAR" VALE (low, gravelly, unimpressed): "Tell me again, Lazari. Slowly. Who the hells stole the book?"

LAZARI "RAT" FENWICK (nervous, whispering fast): "I—I don’t know, Durnik! It weren’t me, I swear! But—but someone paid off one of The Nameless to grab it! And now everyone’s looking for it! The Trade Guilds, The Silver Cloaks, even a veiled faction!"

[Scene shifts—dark alleyway, rain slicked streets, whispers in the shadows. A hooded figure kneels before a veiled woman whose face is hidden in shadow.] THE VEILED CONTACT (smooth, unsettling, inhumanly calm): "The Gilded Ledger contains knowledge… knowledge that was meant to be buried. If it is not returned to us, we shall take it from the hands of whoever holds it now. Permanently."

NARRATOR (chuckling darkly): "And just like that, the hunt was on."

"The Gilded Ledger was the most valuable book in Eldenhold, and now? Now it was missing. Greythorn wanted it buried. Silas wanted it leveraged. The Nameless wanted it weaponized. The veiled strangers wanted it erased from existence."

"And whoever actually had it? Well, they were about to find out just how much a book was really worth."

[Scene shifts—The Gilded Gryphon, night. Pip Thistledown is once again at the bar, drunk off his ass.] PIP THISTLEDOWN (drunk, laughing): "Y’know, I heard someone’s gone and lost a ledger full of city secrets! Can you imagine the poor sod who’s got that thing? Bet they ain’t sleepin’ easy tonight!"

[Silence.]

Borin Thaldrum stops cleaning a tankard. Lina Farrow looks at Pip like he’s just cursed the whole damn bar.

A hooded figure in the corner slowly stands up and walks out the door.

Somewhere in Eldenhold, someone just realized they are holding a book worth more than their life.

NARRATOR (leaning in, voice lower, conspiratorial): "The only question is… who got to them first?"

13Before the campaign · EldenholdA Contract Outside of TimeVeyna Kael receives an easy contract on an innocent bookbinder whose crime may not have happened yet.

The air in Eldenhold was thick with the weight of an incoming storm. The streets, slick with the remnants of an earlier drizzle, shimmered under the lantern glow of the Gilded Gryphon. Inside, mercenaries, merchants, and outcasts alike filled the air with conversation and the clatter of tankards. At a far table, Veyna Kael sat alone, idly running a dagger along the worn wood of the tabletop. A folded slip of parchment rested beneath her hand—a contract, simple in writing, but impossible in nature. The target was a nobody. Not a noble, not a merchant, not even a known criminal. Just a bookbinder, a man who spent his days repairing texts in the lower district. No debts, no enemies, no hidden scandals. Nothing. And yet, someone wanted him dead. Veyna had taken thousands of contracts in her lifetime. She never asked why. But this one felt wrong.

She was still staring at the contract when a familiar, ragged voice cut through the tavern's noise. "What happens once, happens twice." Veyna exhaled sharply and didn’t look up. "Go away, Griggs." Across from her, Old Man Griggs settled onto the stool like he’d been invited. He smelled of damp parchment, old whiskey, and sleepless nights. His silvered hair hung wild around his face, and his eyes, unfocused yet piercing, locked onto the parchment beneath her fingers. "Seen that name before," he muttered, tapping a dirt-caked finger against the table. Veyna finally looked up, narrowing her gaze. "You don’t even know what this is." Griggs blinked. "Don’t I?" She hated when he did this. She hated it more when he was right. "This contract isn’t normal," she admitted, voice low. "No," Griggs agreed, his expression shifting, momentarily lucid. "Because he hasn’t done it yet." Veyna frowned. "Hasn’t done what?" Griggs let out a dry laugh and leaned forward. "The thing that gets him killed."

The next morning, Magister Halvar Greythorn strode into the Sanctum’s lower chambers, his expression set in stone. The guards at his side flanked him with precision, hands resting on the pommels of their blades. He wasn’t here for debate. At the far end of the chamber, a scribe in simple robes knelt beside a stack of worn tomes, fingers dusted in ink. His name was Elias Forlan, and he was supposed to be dead by morning. Greythorn studied him for a long moment. A nobody. A man who should be forgettable. But something felt off. He turned to the senior archivist beside him. "You’re certain this is the man?" The archivist nodded. "He spends his days copying texts, restoring old records. He’s never been involved in any crimes, no debts, no suspicious activity. But…" The archivist hesitated. "A week ago, he requested access to restricted records. He said he found… errors." Greythorn’s gaze sharpened. "Errors?" The archivist nodded. "He claimed the dates didn’t match. Said that a war that was supposed to happen didn’t. That a treaty that was never signed somehow existed. He… kept asking the wrong questions." Greythorn exhaled slowly. Someone wanted this man removed before he found the right answer.

By nightfall, Veyna stood on a rooftop, staring down at the dim candlelight of the scribe’s home. The contract was simple. The kill was easy. So why was she hesitating? "One choice makes two," Griggs had told her before she left. "One life ends, another begins." She didn’t believe in prophecy. But she believed in patterns. Something wasn’t right. This wasn’t just some fool stumbling into the wrong archives. This wasn’t about secrets—it was about time. And if Griggs was right… killing this man wouldn’t be stopping something. It would be starting it. Her fingers tightened around the hilt of her dagger. Below, Elias sat by candlelight, scrawling ink across parchment, unknowingly deciding the future. And above, Veyna stood at the edge of a decision. For the first time in her life, she didn’t know which choice was the right one.

14Before the campaign · EldenholdA Matter of Professional DisagreementKaela and Veyna arrive to kill the same target, then debate ownership while efficiently emptying a warehouse.

A darkened warehouse on the edge of the Industrial District. Torchlight flickers off rusted metal beams, crates stacked high with contraband. A dozen armed thugs stand guard over their operation—until two shadows slip in from opposite sides. KAELA VOSS (grinning, teasing): "Well, well, look who showed up. Thought ghosts weren’t supposed to leave a trail, Veyna." VEYNA "THE GHOST" KAEL (cold, annoyed): "And I thought bounty hunters were supposed to be efficient. Yet here you are, late." KAELA (mock offense): "Late? I was taking my time, savoring the moment. Didn’t know I had competition tonight." VEYNA (dry): "You don’t. I don’t consider you competition." A thug steps forward, drawing a sword. Kaela flicks an axe into his throat mid-step without even looking, her eyes still locked on Veyna. Veyna sighs, slipping behind another guard and twisting a dagger into his ribs as if it were an afterthought. THUG LEADER (confused, panicked): "Wait—what the fuck? Who are you two working for?! Is this a setup?!" KAELA (laughing): "Funny story, pal. Turns out we both got hired to kill you. Someone out there really doesn’t like you." VEYNA (sighing, barely paying attention as she disarms another thug): "Typical. Can’t even find original contracts these days. First come, first served, Voss." KAELA (grinning, blocking a strike with her axe and kicking a thug backward): "See, that’s where we disagree. I was here first. Clearly, I get the payday." VEYNA (dodging a blade effortlessly, slipping behind the attacker and slitting his throat with precise efficiency): "If you were here first, why are you still talking?" KAELA (mock wounded): "Ouch. I’d be insulted if I didn’t know how badly you want to keep my attention." Three more thugs rush forward. Veyna sighs, throwing a knife without looking—straight into the throat of the first. Kaela rolls her eyes and catches the second thug’s arm mid-swing, twisting it until the bone snaps. The third thug hesitates, then turns to run. Veyna and Kaela both shoot him a look. VEYNA & KAELA (simultaneously): "No." Two daggers hit him from opposite sides before he can take another step. He collapses, twitching. KAELA (grinning as she wipes blood off her axe): "You know, I think we make a pretty good team." VEYNA (deadpan, pulling a cloth over her blade to clean it): "I hate you." KAELA (mock thoughtful): "Hate? That’s such a strong word. Maybe it’s something else. Maybe you just—" VEYNA (cutting her off, turning sharply): "—Do not finish that sentence." Kaela smirks but lets it drop. The last thug wheezes on the ground, coughing blood. Kaela steps forward to finish the job, but Veyna moves first, slicing his throat with cold precision. Silence settles in the room, save for the distant clanking of industrial machinery outside. KAELA (chuckling, stretching her arms): "Alright, so what now? We can’t both claim the contract." VEYNA (glancing at the corpses, shrugging): "You can have it." KAELA (raising an eyebrow, smirking): "That easy? No argument? No sarcastic remark?" VEYNA (turning to leave, voice neutral): "I don’t waste time fighting over scraps." Veyna steps toward the exit. Kaela watches her go, twirling her axe idly in one hand before shaking her head with amusement. KAELA (calling after her): "One of these days, Ghost, you’re gonna have to admit you like having me around." Veyna doesn’t turn back. But as she vanishes into the shadows, Kaela swears she hears the faintest exhale of a sigh. VEYNA (barely audible, muttered under her breath): "One of these days, you’re going to make me kill you."
